Breast Cancer Survivors Opting for Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive Surgery

A new study shows that a growing number of breast cancer survivors are opting to undergo breast reconstruction surgery immediately after breast removal surgery. This number has been steadily rising for the last 15 years.

In the past, many women who have had to undergo breast removal surgery – otherwise known as a mastectomy – were considered to be too high-risk for breast reconstruction surgery. However, modern breast reconstruction techniques and cancer treatments make the procedure safer than it has ever been in the past, even for patients over the age of 65 or those undergoing radiation therapy.

Breast Reconstruction with Implants

Breast reconstruction surgery is usually performed with silicone or saline implants, much like most kinds of breast augmentation surgery. It can also be performed using the patient’s own abdominal tissues, but that is usually riskier for breast cancer patients. Most breast reconstruction surgeons opt for implants mainly because they are easier to remove if there is a failure, something that is common in high-risk patients. When abdominal tissue is used and the procedure fails, it is much more difficult to correct. Reconstruction surgery using implants is also much less invasive and has a shorter recovery time.

While breast reconstruction surgery is technically a cosmetic procedure, it can help restore the appearance of a patient’s breasts after a mastectomy and make the chest look balanced in a bra or swimsuit. The difference between a natural breast and a reconstructed breast is noticeable only when the breasts are exposed; there is virtually no difference in appearance when they are covered. This can go a long way in helping the patient’s self-esteem as well as her appearance.

The current success rate of breast reconstruction surgery among high-risk patients is 88 percent. That is indeed promising, but it is still much lower than with low-risk patients. That percentage should go up as new surgical techniques and cancer treatments develop over time.
